When people hear the word depression, here’s what they envision:
Someone lost someone dear to them , their grieving , their depressed.
Someone was oppressed , their traumatized, their depressed.
Someone had an accident , they are healing , their depressed.
But someone who hasn’t gone through anything can’t be depressed right?
We believe in something I like to call justifiable depression.
You can’t just wake be depressed lest you have a good reason as to why right?
Just yesterday, in a conversation with a friend of mine , she told me that all through growing up she never understood when people would talk about depression.
“It didn’t seem like something real or even necessary for someone to want to lose their life over”
Years and bouts of awareness later , she begs to differ now.
Well, here is what depression is to me:
Depression is your friendly neighborhood burglar, he robbed the corner store , you’ve seen the effects of his presence so you protect yourself. You tighten up your security, but he robs you anyway. He finds a way to maneuver the locks and shackles you’ve protected yourself with .
Uninvited, it comes , it enters through your back door , it lingers in the corridors of your brain deviously stealing away your priced possessions. In this case , your sanity , your peace of mind & your sleep. You don’t know what’s wrong , nobody knows why you’re being so moody or why you’ve suddenly withdrawn yourself from your friend group . This isn’t just for depression but the society we live in won’t allow you to have an unjustifiable mental illness , your mental health is only in jeopardy when you’re seen running around the streets naked .
Don’t get me wrong , I’m not saying depression doesn’t have triggers , there are causes , but they don’t have to be apparent or justifiable to you in order to call it depression. I spoke about developmental trauma last time , you don’t know what someone is going through or how they were raised or how the things they’ve been subjected to affected them . Sometimes you don’t even know how the things you render insignificant might be vital to their mental stability.
So this May , as we commemorate mental health awareness month I urge you to check on your loved ones , make sure their themselves , ask them if their okay if need be and also check on yourself , keep your mental health in check , don’t put yourself in situations that jeopardize that for you.
I have decided to also challenge myself this month , I’m going to be posting every week as we raise awareness to mental health issues, triggers & possible solutions in every spectrum . That being said , We’re going to share our stories on our personal mental health struggles as well as our experience with loved ones who have struggled from this problem(anonymously of course) so if you’ve told me your story before and you’re comfortable with sharing kindly let me know again so we can see how to go about it , if you haven’t but you have something you’d like to share you can always contact me on my social media by clicking here .
LET’S SPREAD AWARENESS PEOPLE.
